Founded in 1993 and launched in 1995, JIU is a fully online institution offering one-of-a-kind graduate and undergraduate degree programs and certificates in the fields of business and education. |
Accreditation: |
In March 1999, JIU became the first entirely virtual university in the U.S. to be accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, 800.621.7440, (www.ncahigherlearningcommission.org). |
Student Body Composition: |
Created to be the “world’s university,” JIU serves a rich student Composition: population currently representing more than 40 countries. Most students are working adults in need of a convenient and flexible educational environment. The average student age is 37. |
Faculty Composition: |
The University employs the brightest minds from the world’s leading universities, including Oxford University, Carnegie Mellon University, London Business School and Thunderbird, and the Garvin School of International Management, to create its courses. JIU’s professors are professionally active in the fields they teach, ensuring current, relevant instruction. |
Student Experience: |
JIU students participate in a high level of student/student and student/professor interaction, creating a sense of community and collaboration. Many courses incorporate group projects, research papers, and case studies into the curriculum. Students can expect to devote 14-20 hours of work to each course per week. The university offers a number of tools and resources to support the success of its students, including personalized academic advising, 24/7 technical support, professional resources, and online tutoring. Jones e-global library®, the first library to operate entirely online, provides research guides, electronic books, article databases, document delivery service, and 24/7 access to professional reference librarians. |
Academic Calendar: |
Courses are offered exclusively online in instructor-facilitated, eight-week formats. Courses begin the first Sunday of each month, and students may enroll in as many as three concurrent courses. Applications for admission to degree programs are accepted throughout the year. |
