JIU’s School of Education offers two different online doctoral programs in Education to meet varying interests: EdD in Adult Education Leadership and EdD in K-12 Education Leadership. Candidates who are interested in an advanced graduate degree but do not want to pursue a doctorate degree should consider the EdS in K-12 Education Leadership. CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT IN CONTENT AND DISSERTATION ADVISING (DOC) COURSES IS MANDATORY. REVIEW COURSES Doctoral program students who have been pre-approved to transfer graduate level credits from one university automatically will be enrolled in a Review section to monitor the relevant course. This required review section is a Pass/Fail, 0 credit, $0 fee course. Students will be required to participate in the Forum discussion as they would in a regular section and also will be required to submit a study guide that will assist preparations for the Comprehensive Exam and Dissertation. Doctorate of Education Adult Education Leadership Adult Education Leadership Doctorate of Education K-12 Education Leadership K-12 Education Leadership Admission Requirements Applicants who are admitted into the Doctorate of Education (EdD) in K-12 Leadership degree program have met the following admission requirements: Submit a completed application. Submit official transcripts that document an earned: Masters of Education (MEd) or a related degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from a regionally-accredited college or university (or its international equivalent). Bachelors degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 from a regionally-accredited college or university (or its international equivalent). Candidates must submit an FBI Background Check prior to taking their first field experience course. See below for additional Background Check Requirements. Submit proof of an active professional state-endorsed K-12 teaching, principal or administrator's license/certificate. Candidates need to research their state licensure requirements prior to applying. See our State Disclosure web page for more information. Submit a professional resume detailing teaching and/or administrative experience. Sign and submit K-12 Educators Program Checklist. Sign and submit the Professional Dispositions Survey. Background Check Requirements New students to the School of Education who enroll in K-12 programs requiring a field experience (MEd in K-12 for Licensed Educators, MEd in K-12 Leading to Initial Licensure, EdS in K-12 Education Leadership, EdD in K-12 Education Leadership) must submit their fingerprints to the FBI for a background check. The FBI background check is not an admission's requirement but is required prior to taking the first field experience course. The process of obtaining a background check from the FBI can take up to twelve weeks. It is important that students order a background check from the FBI immediately after admission to JIU’s School of Education. Students may begin their studies but will be limited to taking two classes (neither of which includes a field experience) and will not be allowed to continue until the FBI background check is on file. The Registrar’s Office will audit the files weekly until the background check information is received. The Registrar takes appropriate action if the FBI background check is received that indicates a criminal history. Students who have a criminal history may be dismissed from the program. Licensure EdS and EdD K-12 Leadership Applicants seeking K-12 Leadership Licensure must submit State Licensure Exam Scores to the Registrar no later than by the end of the first year of study and prior to Clinical Practice. EdD K-12 Leadership Applicants not seeking K-12 Licensure: Already possess a K-12 Leadership License: Submit test scores to the Registrar by the end of the first year of study and prior to Clinical Practice. No license and not seeking licensure: Submit a well-written admissions essay detailing your reasons for seeking an EdD in K-12 Leadership, professional goals, and research objectives (1000 word minimum). EdS K-12 Leadership Applicants must meet all licensure requirements. EdD Adult Education is not a licensure program; thus, Applicants are not required to meet licensure requirements.
