Summer is a busy time for everyone. The kids are out of school, vacations, weddings, family reunions and BBQ’s pop up almost every weekend. Before we know it, fall will round the bend and the school year will start once more. This month at JIU we are focusing on giving back to our community. As with most communities across the country, the return to school can be a tough burden on kids and families. School supply lists seem to grow each year and many families struggle to afford the basic supplies to get their kids through the school year. On top on it all, several Colorado communities have faced devastating wildfires this summer which wiped out homes, dislocated families and whole neighborhoods. The Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs burned over 400 homes! With such devastating natural disasters and a general, ongoing need for basic everyday items, JIU has decided to support several local charities in hopes of making at least a small impact in our community.
Wildfire/Natural Disaster Aid:
JIU is proud to partner with the American Red Cross to aid victims of the recent Colorado wildfires. Donate here from July 16, 2012 to August 15, 2012. We will track the amount of our donations and keep you updated on how much we were able to contribute to this great cause. Let’s help our Colorado community!
Stuff for Students:
Every year, the list of school supplies required by students grows, right along with the costs associated with these materials. In an effort to help defray this need-based cost for low-income families, Jones International University is teaming with 9NEWS to provide “Stuff for Students”, a community service program that collects school supplies for children in need.
Beginning July 18th and continuing through August 10th, blue barrels will be available in both the corporate and Geddes locations, where you can drop off any of the supplies that are listed below. These will then be distributed by the Volunteers of America to more than 15 area school districts.
JIU will partner with The Potter’s House and Frazier Global Strategies to assemble and distribute 500 backpacks stuffed with school supplies to local children and families in need. Backpacks will be distributed on Sunday, July 29 following the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services at The Potters House.
JIU is thrilled to support our local Colorado communities in need. We encourage all JIU students and faculty to look into their own communities and find an opportunity to make a difference!
