The Juggling Act

Posted on: January 31, 2013

As a student at JIU you likely have a full plate, or even multiple full plates that you are juggling all at the same time.  Family obligations, work, New Year resolutions to eat healthier and exercise more, and oh yes, your JIU course work to complete.  With all of these responsibilities, it can be hard to stay on track with assignments and dedicate enough time to your education.  To help you maintain focus and your sanity, we’ve compiled a few tips and ideas to keep your studies organized and on-track.

1. Find a time

With crazy schedules and multiple responsibilities, it is important to set aside specific hours to focus on school work.  Are you a night owl?  Morning person?  Find a time where you are most likely to be productive and stick to it.  Create a rigid schedule for yourself and mark your time as an important “can’t miss” appointment.

2. Make a list

For each class, create a list of assignments and to-do items with due dates.  This schedule will keep you on-time with assignments and will help reduce stress of completing last minute tasks before deadlines.  By staying on-track with your checklist, you will help insure that you put forth your best effort with every assignment.  Not to mention, checking items off the list will result in a great feeling of accomplishment!

3. Stay away from Facebook!

Did you know that the average person spends 8 hours each month on Facebook?  That is a huge chunk of time that you could use to focus on your education!  Resist the temptation to sign onto your favorite social networking sites while studying, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish when you aren’t checking status updates!

4. Nibble away at the material

Slow and steady wins the race!  By spending small chunks of time on your studies each day you’ll be far better prepared for that final exam (and next career!) than if you wait till the last day of the term to cram.  By studying a little each day, your brain will have the opportunity to slowly absorb bits of information and build upon concepts.  You’ll find you’ll have a better and more complete understanding of the material than if you had just crammed as much info into your head as possible on the last day of the term.  Even just 15 minutes every night before you go to sleep can help you retain material.

5. Ask Questions!

If you don’t get it, just ask!  Your JIU professors are ready and available to answer your questions; they are your resource and guide to successfully navigating through your degree.  Don’t wait three weeks before you ask questions, the sooner you get help, the easier it will be to stay on track with assignments and workload.  In addition to your professors, your fellow classmates are also a great resource.  Chances are high that other people are struggling through the same concepts. Two minds are always better than one and you’ll be amazed at the progress you can make when you are part of a team!
