Overview
This course provides candidates with an understanding of the processes used in carrying out inquiry in the “real world” that is scientifically based and empirically sound. Learning the overall structure of the research process, with an accompanying focus on the complexity and controversies in social research, candidates will examine and choose from competing methodologies to guide their research activities.
The course project, Research Paper: Inquiry into Improving Shareholder Value, focuses on a genuine, real world problem in need of a solution. The formal paper will be based on both seminal and current research findings pertinent to the chosen research issue. The paper will also include a historical timeline, starting with a seminal work(s) in the field up to and including current research and a section detailing future research opportunities.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
-
Identify the diversity of methods (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method) and procedures for undertaking practitioner-based research.
-
Develop skills in using evaluation tools (both observational and statistical) and use these tools in crafting research question(s); propose a testable hypothesis.
-
Demonstrate understanding of the various investigative tools used by researchers and use those tools to maximize the success of practitioner-based research.
-
Identify applicable seminal research, theory, and/or methods from this course relevant to individual research question(s); contribute to the field of study by extending previous knowledge.
