Overview
This course builds on the advanced statistical concepts presented in BA721: The Foundational Basis of Statistics and examines different tools and methods for analyzing statistical data. Candidates will learn how to use statistical data to draw conclusions regarding the nature of the samples studied and to make inferences from the data about the general population.
The course project, Exploring Statistics Using SPSS: Analysis, Reflection, and Suggestions, consists of four separate but related components that allow candidates to use critical thinking skills, personal experiences in business, and future research goals to modify, expand, and run an analysis in SPSS that is new and original. In addition, candidates will represent advice, concerns, and suggestions at the end of the paper.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
-
Identify the correct analysis for different research investigations; be able to apply concepts to new and existing research studies.
-
Demonstrate knowledge, use, and importance of basic statistical theory involving parametric statistical tests.
-
Demonstrate knowledge, use, and importance of non-parametric statistical tests when parametric assumptions are violated.
-
Apply statistical knowledge to individual problems involving the analysis of data. Properly use methods of data screening to verify data is appropriate, and incorporate appropriate assumptions of individual analytic procedures prior to running the analysis.
-
Analyze data and produce corresponding output, including tables, charts and graphs.
-
Demonstrate professional business and statistical writing following standard APA protocol. Report all results accurately and honestly. Mention any deviations from procedures, any failure of statistical assumptions, any outlier scores that might unduly influence the results, and so on.
-
Demonstrate understanding of course material through a comprehensive course project that demonstrates critical and creative thinking by suggesting additional variables and statistical analyses of the provided data set.
-
Provide an end of term reflective posting, assessing the knowledge gained from the course; specifically, what methods, techniques, and procedures might be useful in their personal and professional life.
