Overview

This course explores writing, research, analysis, inquiry, argument, revision and editing. It prepares students for successful writing in their Jones International University® courses and in the workplace by developing skills that create strong, effective documents. Students will investigate a wide range of related topics including:

  • Inquiry-based research and framing questions
  • Primary and secondary research
  • Techniques for successful writing
  • Forms of argument
  • Plagiarism, citation and APA style

The course project is an Inquiry and Argument Essay: Persuading an Audience. Students will design an inquiry-based research project, generate framing questions, research answers to those questions, analyze and evaluate sources, and make an argument about their inquiry topic. The goal is to use the writing process to compose an effective, persuasive and error-free research paper that argues a specific point to a specific audience. 

Course Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Use the writing process to compose effective, well-crafted, error-free documents for specific audiences.
  • Compose a high-quality, academic research paper which uses valid and persuasive arguments appropriate to selected audiences.
  • Design, conduct, and document an inquiry-based research project.
  • Conduct research with both primary and secondary sources.
  • Analyze, interpret, and evaluate primary and secondary sources.
  • Write, revise, and edit a course project which is well-organized, uses research, and demonstrates successful writing.
  • Use editing techniques to create clean, effective documents.
  • Participate in collaborative discussions, including peer response discussions, in which the student demonstrates critical thinking, professionalism, offers feedback on in-process writing, and uses feedback to increase the effectiveness of written documents.
