Overview
This course examines the process of managing personal finance for individuals and families. It covers personal budgets, income and expenses, and estate planning with both short-term and long-term perspectives. Students will investigate a wide range of related topics including:
- Goal setting and tools for financial planning
- Taxes and money management
- Assessing and managing credit
- Stocks, bonds, and asset allocation
The course project is a Financial Plan: Achieving Personal Financial Goals. The plan includes financial and career goals, budgets, a balance sheet, a cash flow statement, an insurance plan, an investment plan, tax planning, and a plan for retirement.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Set financial goals that are appropriate for a specific client.

Create a budget designed to help a specific client achieve their goals.

Determine the best ways for a client to manage income and expense cash flows.

Determine insurance needs for a client.

Develop strategies for managing credit and planning for retirement.

Develop a financial plan based on financial condition, objectives, constraints, and obligations of a client.

Students will use Microsoft Excel® to complete assignments in this course.
