Overview

This course explores how organizations can manage knowledge to make the most of a company's intellectual capital and achieve long-term sustainability. The focus is on building a learning organization and the unique challenges relating to motivation, retention, and training. Students will investigate a wide range of related topics including:

  • Knowledge-intensive firms
  • Business process re-engineering
  • Knowledge management tools
  • Communities of practice

The course project is a Knowledge Management Proposal (or Evaluation): Designing (or Improving) a Knowledge Management Initiative. For a specific organization, students will either design a new knowledge management initiative, or evaluate and recommend improvements for an existing knowledge management system.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of knowledge in contemporary organizations and illustrate how this has changed over the last 100 years.
  • Describe the difference between data, information, and knowledge, and articulate the relevance of these distinctions.
  • Critically appraise different approaches to managing knowledge within organizations in terms of ability to achieve different purposes.
  • Analyze your own organization’s approach to managing knowledge.
  • Discuss strategies to use knowledge management to support innovation.
  • Develop a knowledge management proposal or evaluation, articulating your vision for knowledge management within the organization.
