Overview

This course introduces the emerging concept of business intelligence (BI). Students gain a clear understanding of the affect of BI on an organization using case studies, problem-solving strategies, and system usage techniques.

This course presents an overview of the technologies available to support decision-making and knowledge management in organizations. The first part of the course focuses on foundations of decision support research, while the latter part of the course focuses on more current issues.  The primary areas of study form the basis for the course:

  • Decision Support Systems and Its Components
  • Group and Organizational Support Systems
  • Expert Systems and Intelligent Systems
  • Data Warehouse and Data, Text, & Web Mining
  • Business Analytics & Data Visualization
  • Knowledge Management Systems

Course Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze and explain the difference between data, knowledge, and information related to business intelligence.
  • Integrate BI concepts and analytics into a management approach.
  • Deploy needs assessment and task analysis into the organizational readiness related to the overall BI implementation process.
  • Implement management strategies into the knowledge management and web mining aspects of a BI system.
  • Delineate and analyze data warehousing as well as data marts from a BI management standpoint.
