Academic Advising
JIU uses the Internet, email, and online forums to allow you to communicate quickly with Teaching Faculty and other students - at a time most convenient for you. In addition, our staff provides online, email, and telephone support to all students. As a student, you will participate in an Online JIU Orientation prior to beginning your first online course. An Academic Chair directs this orientation, which provides an opportunity for you to get answers to your questions.
When you are admitted as a degree student, you are assigned an academic advisor, who will work with you throughout your program. Your advisor assists you in assessing your academic goals and formulating your individualized degree plan. You can also contact your advisor for help in choosing courses, understanding program requirements, policies and procedures, and coordinating interaction with your Teaching Faculty.
With so many classes to choose from, academic advising is essential. Your advisor and you will develop a Degree Plan, a "roadmap" for you to follow to earn your degree.
Expect your advisor to contact you periodically, and if you have a question about enrollment or your degree program, the Academic Advisor is there to assist you. Remember, at JIU your advisor is only an email away.
