I hope this finds you all well and enjoying the long days of summer. Here is the latest from the Jones International University School of Education.
Please welcome Dr. Ali Mageehon to the JIU School of Education Academic Leadership Team. Dr. Mageehon, who earned her PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Denver, works from her home in New Mexico. She brings a lifetime of experience in adult education to her new role, and we are very pleased that she has chosen to join the leadership team. Dr. Mageehon will be responsible for leading JIU’s four degree specializations for adult educators and administrators, including:
In an effort to maximize students’ abilities to communicate the content of their MEd degrees to the larger world, the Academic Leadership Team has been working to rename the majority of education courses. The new concise and explanatory course titles will be designed to better meet your needs when you submit your transcripts to your state departments of education to become licensed professionals. Look for these changes in the coming months.
Given the rapid growth of JIU’s School of Education, we are now able to offer students a broad range of courses every month in addition to multiple sections of most courses. If you do not find the course that you need, please ask your Academic Services Counselor (Joslyn Radden or Brad Ingram), and we will put the courses that you need into the schedule.
I would like to thank all School of Education students who take the time to complete their end-of-course surveys. The SoE, professors and I very much value your feedback and use it to improve our courses, our support services and our teaching. Because of the quality of your feedback, the School of Education is on path to set a record this year for students’ satisfaction with course materials, professors, learning practices and support services!
I have recently hired seven new exceptional faculty members who are excited to be part of this fascinating learning environment. Please welcome these remarkable professors to the JIU family.
We have updated the MEd Licensure Handbook. Please take the time to read carefully this important document and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
QUESTION: What is the “NASDTEC Knowledgebase” and why is this database critical to our students throughout the country?
ANSWER: The Colorado Department of Education has updated the NASDTEC Knowledgebase site with Jones International University listed as a “Colorado Educator Preparation Institution.” (NASDTEC stands for National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification.)
The general public (including students and professors) may access the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement 2005-2010 (http://www.nasdtec.org/agreement.tpl) to see that Colorado is one of the states that has signed the agreement. However, the NASDTEC Knowledgebase portal is password protected and not available to the general public. Nevertheless, the information is available to state department of education directors, so state personnel can see that JIU is an approved program of preparation in Colorado.
What does this mean for JIU’s students? Being listed provides another important reason that state personnel should recognize JIU’s MEd teacher and principal/administrator licensure degrees. Forty-four (44) states and jurisdictions have signed the NASDTEC agreement regarding teachers, and 31 states and jurisdictions have signed the NASDTEC agreement regarding administrators.
If, after reading this letter, you have any questions regarding your degree specialization, please work with your Academic Services Counselor (Brad Ingram or Joslyn Radden). Brad or Joslyn will help you prepare a course sequence degree plan that works for you.
Please keep in touch with me on your progress and let me know if there is any way that I can be of service to you as you work to complete your degree in education at Jones International University. I am committed to your success and interested in learning additional ways to support JIU’s education students.
Sincerest best wishes,
Robert W. Fulton, PhD
Dean, School of Education
