Jeannette Mancilla-Martinez completed her B.A. at Mt. St. Mary’s College in 2000 and began her career as an elementary school teacher in Los Angeles, CA. She has extensive experience teaching English language learners (ELLs) in various instructional settings, including a two-way Spanish-English immersion program. In 2004, she received an Ed.M. in Language and Literacy, certified as a Reading Specialist, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). In June 2009, Jeannette received her Ed.D., in Language and Literacy, also from HGSE. Over the past six years, she has worked on several federally funded studies to address the academic needs of ELLs. Jeannette is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago; her appointment is in Literacy, Language, and Culture. Her primary research interest is the language and literacy development of “at-risk” populations, including ELLs, immigrant students, and students who struggle with reading.
